Unexplained cracking in polycarbonate (PC) guards and windows is usually environmental stress cracking (ESC), not a strength problem: incompatible adhesives, gaskets or cleaners migrate into high-stress zones of the sheet and initiate micro-cracks. Based on Section 3.6 of the Exolon® technical manual, this article maps PC's compatibility boundaries — resistant to mineral acids and most oils, but attacked by alkalis, amines, aromatic/halogenated solvents, aldehydes, ketones, esters and methanol — and adds practical guidance on threadlockers, PVC gaskets and neutral silicone seals.

Polycarbonate (PC) sheet has a pore-free surface that resists dirt, so cleaning should be easy — scratches almost always come from the wrong method: dry rubbing, razor blades, abrasives or rotating brushes, plus chemical damage from solvent-, amine- or alkali-based cleaners. Based on Chapter 8 of the Exolon® technical manual, this article provides do / don't quick-reference tables and field recipes for five scenarios on equipment guards: daily dust, grease, dye/sealant residue, rust marks and electrostatic dust attraction.

The minimum cold-bending radius of PC sheet is 150 times the sheet thickness (AR hard-coated sheet excepted); smaller radii require thermoforming. Cold folding is restricted to thin sheet: 1–2.5 mm to R2/90° max, 3–4 mm to R3/90°, 5–6 mm to R4/60°, with roughly 25° of over-folding to compensate spring-back and several days of stress balancing before the part reaches its final shape. Cold-folded and cold-bent parts must also be kept away from aggressive chemicals.
